Press Release

Mesmerized by light and how it is perceived, Marcia Roberts presents at Rosamund Felsen Gallery her most recent paintings along with a selection of her past works. Roberts, who comes out of the California Light & Space movement, seeks to discover the perfect method that evokes the same effect and true nature of light. Her technique remains devout to the painter’s brush and contrasts with the techniques used by the Light & Space artists.

Through a painstaking methodical process, iterations upon iterations are created until the delicate balance between the palette, shading, gradation, and surface conditions render the same effect as natural light. Depending on the context and perspective - such as time of day, distance from the paintings, and angle from which each are viewed - different aspects and elements present themselves. Of the new works, one series of paintings continues the same line of investigation. While in her other series, a diverging painterly facet yields texture, another variable in Roberts’ careful algorithm. All the new paintings make use of intense color.

Older works dating through the 60s are also presented. These older works demonstrate the myriad of elements - such as dimensionality, geometric shapes, and color palette - employed in her ever-unfolding journey for an ideal representation of light and of space.
