Biography

Grant Mudford was born in Sydney, Australia in 1944. He studied architecture at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. In the 1960s & 1970s he photographed for advertising, fashion, magazine editorial and theater, and worked on numerous short films as a cinematographer. In 1974 and 1977 he received 2 Visual Arts Board Travel Grants from the Australia Council for the Arts, which enabled him to live in London and later New York. He had exhibitions at Light Gallery, NY in 1976 & 1977 as well as Photographers’ Gallery, London; Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney; and Powell Street Gallery, Melbourne. In 1977 he moved to Los Angeles, and in 1979 there was a survey exhibition of his photographs at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Wash., D.C.; the same year he began to show at the Rosamund Felsen Gallery.

In the 1980s he had editorial assignments for American and international publications including Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Fortune, House and Garden, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, among many others. The Museum of Contemporary Art commissioned him to travel throughout the US for their architecture exhibition and book, Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture. The exhibition traveled to Philadelphia Museum of Art; Centre Georges Pompidou; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art Gunma, Japan; Kimbell Art Museum, Ft Worth; and Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH. In 2002-2003, Mudford was commissioned by the Getty Museum to photograph Walt Disney Concert Hall while under construction and upon completion for the book, Symphony. His photograph of Philips Exeter Academy Library, designed by Louis I. Kahn was selected in 2005 for Commerative USPS Stamp Program & in 2014 received the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award.
